The Smurfs is an American animated television series that aired on the Cartoon Network from November 27, 2001 to March 31, 2012, and was produced by Hanna-Barbera. Originally, the show was originally created as The Smurfs, which aired on Saturday mornings from 1984 to 1985. However, the first two seasons were not licensed by Viacom International Inc. due to poor ratings.
In 1991, the Smurfs were renewed for a second series and the first few episodes of the second season were animated by Hanna-Barbera. The Smurfs premiered on November 27, 1991, and aired new episodes weekly for the entire first season. The show ran for four seasons and ended in 1994. Since then, the show has aired as a Saturday morning animated series on Cartoon Network in various countries.
Each episode consisted of two segments, with two episodes being shot as a double. From season three onwards, the double was animated in a single pass, as opposed to two separate animations.
The Smurfs is primarily a fantasy series about a race of diminutive blue-skinned creatures who live in a large cave under Mount Smurf. The series is notable for its presence of a somewhat heavy emphasis on puns and humor. In the original series, each episode featured a variety of slapstick humor and puns, and included a number of references to culture, art, and politics.
The Smurfs are inspired by the Roman Catholic story of the Smurfs. In this version, they have a connection to an ancient civilization from a large cave called Smurf Village, where they are found by Gargamel. However, Gargamel had done a number of things to drive them out of their home, such as painting over their cave entrances, and killing Papa Smurf. He also seeks revenge on them for outsmarting him in a previous adventure.
