It wasn’t long ago that North Carolina regulators handed the power to license day care centers to private, profit-motivated companies. But since lawmakers passed a compromise child care bill earlier this year, the state is now poised to take over the process.
On Wednesday, the state board of child care will decide whether to hire a private company to review day care applications and approve or deny licenses, instead of handling the job itself. Supporters of the change say it would allow the agency to hire more people and process day care applications quickly and transparently. Opponents say the change will leave a huge number of families without access to care, and is an example of how privatizing government is bad for public services.
Democrats, Republicans and even some of Gov. Pat McCrory’s staff support the change. But the bill’s original sponsors are trying to pull a fast one. The original bill would have allowed for no license fees, but the compromise bill would still levy fees. The compromise was done to get the bill passed in time for the June 9 legislative session, according to a spokeswoman for House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland). Moore says the deal did not cost the GOP any votes. He says the bill will do the people of North Carolina a service, and the Democrats’ hypocrisy doesn’t matter.
Since McCrory signed the bill, though, he’s had a change of heart. He’s now trying to figure out how to delay the change, said McCrory spokesman Brown Bethea. “The governor did not want to approve legislation that he believed was rushed and flawed, but the state is going to press forward with the policy,” Bethea said.
It may not have taken much for the governor to put the brakes on his signature. The bill itself was flawed, and it’s a change that would have a profound impact on the lives of thousands of families. That’s why the Republican-led Senate was able to push through the bill, and why Moore says the bill is about serving the people.

Intro to TensorFlow
I’m currently reading through the TensorFlow tutorials and it is proving to be quite a steep learning curve for me. I’ve been using R for quite some time, but have recently started learning Python as my main language of choice. I also have some experience in Java.
My problem is that while I have a decent grasp of programming concepts, I don’t have the background in programming structures that would allow me to grasp the concepts TensorFlow is teaching me. I’ve tried reading Python Code Complete (5th edition), but it is very technical, and I don’t think I’m able to relate it to TensorFlow. Is there something out there that would offer me a much more „hands on“ perspective?

I do believe this is a fantastic way to learn about TensorFlow, but I’d definitely recommend that you look into the module, and not the tutorial, since this is much more practical and hands on. TensorFlow is an incredibly broad topic, and you’re not going to be able to learn everything you need in just a couple of days. TensorFlow is built around neural networks, and I don’t know of any great books or videos that would help you grasp this for you specifically, but I think this will get you started.
