patients with pnes most commonly present during the febrile stage. the duration and severity of symptoms between episodes vary widely, and patients have difficulty distinguishing between febrile sensations and their symptoms. this results in nonspecific laboratory testing, most commonly leukocytosis and elevated inflammatory markers. in patients with pnes, a normal neurological examination does not exclude the diagnosis, as up to 20% of patients with pnes will have normal neurological examination findings. symptoms may include mild autonomic dysregulation and many subjective episodes may resemble epileptic seizures, particularly those that occur during sleep.

the internal structure of the smart skin and its manufacturability were evaluated using a custom 3d optical profilometer. values for film thickness uniformity, lateral and vertical measurement variation, and surface roughness were determined. the results were compared with those for a 30 micro-meter thick, rolled, unfilled, clear silicone sheet with a surface roughness of 1.50 µm. the film thickness uniformity (unfilled: 3.4%; casted: 3.3%; rolled: 2.9%) and surface roughness (unfilled: 1.50 µm; casted: 1.41 µm; rolled: 1.25 µm) of the casted smart skin were better than those of the unfilled and rolled silicones. the difference in the thickness uniformity and surface roughness between the casted and rolled silicones was due to the removal of the unfilled surface layer from the surface. in the design concept, a through-hole of about 1 mm in diameter was made in the middle of each microchannel, and the microchannel was continued for up to 40 cm on the backside. the flatness of the casted surface was measured at about 3.3 µm (µm = 1 / 10,000 of a meter) for the inner wall of each channel to reduce the reflection and scatter of light. a different surface profile was observed in each quadrant of the smart skin. the results indicated that the molding method is a useful fabrication method for flexible and transparent microfluidic devices.
