the partition began as a result of the partition of bengal in 1905, the same year that english was made the official language of the newly created muslim majority state of bengal. after the partition, english became the language of the muslim-majority areas, while urdu (and in some cases, persian) became the language of the muslim-minority areas. at the time, the muslim league used english to appeal to the muslim majority. as jinnah, the leader of the muslim league, said in his speech at the lahore session of the indian national congress in 1912: „england has seen the best that is in india. she has seen her great universities, her great colleges, her colleges of learning. she has seen her great technical institutions. she has seen her schools of commerce. she has seen all these things. india may be a country of a hundred languages. it has a hundred languages today. but it is india that counts. and england has seen her greatness.“
these works are of varying degrees of difficulty. the longman anthology of british literature is arguably the easiest, the wine cellar the least. most of these are quite old and well-established and the reading choices are not particularly difficult, though the reader may have to decide which of the authors to concentrate on. the choice of a wine cellar may well be a fruitful one, as there is a feeling of a fine moment when you read the last paragraph of the last essay. this, i think, is an experience worth seeking out.
