i would like to commend smartdraw for giving us the option to share with the community as well. sd7 allows us to share our designs with the world which might not be a bad idea considering some future project we might want to collaborate with them on, plus it is a definite step in the right direction for being a supporter of other people learning about our products. being able to share is definitely a feature i will put to good use.
1) the „quick import“ feature does nothing under sd6. this has been implemented in version 7 and we see it being used. using the import menu, smartdraw opens a dialog where you can find nearly anything you can find in visio, including pictures. you can even pull tables off sharepoint if you do it right. as a visio user, i will never be able to switch back to the „grid view.“
3) although i like being able to save a drawing as pdf, the new version feels like a different app. when you export a drawing to pdf, there is no way to edit the attributes for the different text boxes or layers. if you want to tweak your settings, you have to export each layer and text boxes to a separate page, then crop and save each pdf page.
running smartdraw portable from usb drive:
step 1: right click on the smartdraw.exe file, and choose „run as administrator“.
step 2: once you successfully run it, you should have a popup that says „smartdraw portable has been successfully installed in „c:\windows\syswow64\smartdraw 2008.exe“. to get it started, double-click it or right click on the shortcut on your desktop and choose „run“. you may need to look for that shortcut and right click it to make it a shortcut. that will start the smartdraw portable application. you can click the help button to get started with using the program.
