I have to say, even after nine years of using Elements, I hadn’t discovered the Image > Adjustments > Clarity > Unsharp Mask option until now. I didn’t know anything about this functionality either. In my case, the blur effect was already “zooming in” my photo to emphasize the scenery and the mountains. The raw photo barely captured those in sharp focus, and I used this feature to bring in the mountains into sharp focus, too. This effect is a big step up from the unsharp mask filter in the past. It will be really useful. And it’s a cool effect to play with.
It appears Adobe has made some small adjustments to the various libraries and collections in the program for this new release. The “Organize” tool has a drop-down menu now labeled “All Organize Tools” for easier navigation. The “Home” menu item now offers the option to return to the default view, rather than “Organize”. Additionally, some text on the left edge of the screen moves to the upper right portion of the screen. Some of the main page title text is missing. I’m sure updates to the program will be released soon that will fix these issues. But for now the upgrade is a nice, smooth experience for those familiar with the software. I also see some new tools in the editing and web publishing sections. (I don’t have Photoshop installed on my computer at this time [January, 2019], so I can’t test those features.)
After working with Adobe Photoshop for years and always knowing that I wanted to dive even deeper into the editing capabilities of the software, my earlier statement that the last few new PS features were better is no longer true. I found some exciting new features in this release, as well. The new Levels adjustment tool in the panel options is easy to use. But it’s also powerful in that you can get super detailed results. Thanks, Adobe. I’ve never had any need to use those two new tools. I focused mainly on the other 10, just like I did in earlier versions. But now, I feel I’d really like to own the Extreme Highlight and Extreme Shadow tools, too.
In my opinion, Lightroom is the program photographers should use when they are first starting out or really need just minor adjustments. This program is focused on photo editing and not as much on design. It has the added ability to go well beyond the basic editing options of Lightroom. When looking at the two programs, think about what you’re editing and then choose Lightroom or Photoshop accordingly.
When you first start using Photoshop you’re probably going to want to get into the Eraser or blend modes as soon as possible. The first thing you’re going to want to do is to create a new document in Photoshop and then remove the background. Next is to resize the document. This is so that when you move to Lightroom you are going to have a square document for no modification.
The next cutting edge editing feature that comes with Lightroom is the „Paint Bucket Fill“ tool. This is fantastic for blending certain objects in certain layers. The next thing to do is to use the „Reveal All Layers.“ Coming from Photoshop, this feature allows you to see what you’ve done and if anything needs to be modified.
„Zoom to Fill“ and „Fill with Saturation“ are two features that are worth learning when editing in Lightroom. Using these two features allows you to adjust brightness, color and contrast on underlaying layer’s as well as the over all image.
