In general certain items in an aircraft system are not considered maintenance work except to the extent that they will influence the safe operation of the aircraft. However, the FAA specifies that all the item labeled IM are required for continued airworthiness. These items cannot be removed from the aircraft. The FAA also indicates that they must be continuously documented. IM items include: engine harnesses, brakes (including electric brakes), wheel brakes, main landing gear cables, fuselage and wing skin, composite materials, electrical contacts, landing gear & door spoilers, display, hydraulic & power accessories, and all other electrics, plumbing, wipers, seals, weather and door controllers, windows, wipers, wing tips, loading spacers, and removable services from freight compartment.
Additional maintenance manuals and parts and maintenance manuals specific to the aircraft or a system are available from the manufacturer. These documents will have been created in accordance with the manufacturer’s maintenance records (MMR) for the aircraft and maintenance procedures (MS). An MMR is a formal record of the actions, which are contained in the aircraft it labels the operative set of a part. The operational set of a part consists of the set of operations (factory and aftermarket) that were performed on that part. Operational uses of an aircraft type reference, maintenance, and repair are the maintenance actions.
An Operational Scale Repair Manual (OSRM), Maintenance Manual, Parts and Service Handbook, Generation 3 (GM2316ØØ®), and any other Maintenance Management Manuals (MMMs) are stored in the manual cartridge of the aircraft and shall be available to service providers at the time of service. If the MMM is missing, the OEM and FAA may require that an MMM is obtainable from the manufacturer. As an alternative, the OEM and FAA may provide a Maintenance Management Reference Manual (MMRM) to maintenance personnel to aid in the service of aircraft. If the OEM or FAA so provides, the MMRM may be found in the manual cartridge.
