Photoshop allows you to create a preset background for each layer. Flip through the backgrounds of each layer, merge these into one, and make some changes. You can switch seamlessly from one background to the next and not have to worry about saving and loading a new file. Just adding the background to a layer will show up, regardless of how you are viewing the file. If you are trying to avoid saving the file into a new one and reloading it, Soft Layers will allow this as well.

When selecting a layer, select Motion in the Layers panel toolbar, and then select the smoothing option, or choose File > New. A set of shapes are added to your layer. When selecting this layer, straighten shapes out by selecting Transform > Warp > Straighten or select Control > Transform > Distortion and select Straighten. There, you can increase the angle, which is good to approximate straightening out a layer. If you are not satisfied with the result, select Undo to bring it back to its original position.
